Naija Needs Me

At the beginning of this independence craze, I told myself I was not going to write anything about Nigeria's independence, (guess that is why this is coming pretty late). This was not because I did not see anything to celebrate, but because I think the celebration was overhyped. The celebration was blown out of proportion. I believe it was time to reflect and plan, not time to make a "wonderful" cake and make the cities rowdy.
Truthfully, there is quite a lot to be celebrated about my beloved country.
We celebrate for quite a number of reasons.
Firstly, we celebrate the fact that with the civil war, ethnic and religious clashes, we have still remained a "united" nation. We celebrate that we have been able to produce quite a number of outstanding people. We celebrate that our leaders have been able to distinguish themselves as good or bad by their works in office. We celebrate the fact that foreigners usually think Africa is a country and Nigeria, its capital (that still amazes me, lol). We celebrate our activities, our production and our industries. We celebrate nollywood because it has helped announce us to the world.
For this independence, two categories of people celebrate for different reasons.
Our parents and us.
Our parents celebrate the past because they saw it all
They saw the British have all our economy. They saw the fight for freedom and some of them even took part in it. They knew all about the British government, teachers and missionaries. They exported the food planted on our soil. They found oil shortly after independence. They celebrate oneness and triumph.
We celebrate the future we will create.
We celebrate the hard work and sacrifice we would have to give to improve our nation
We celebrate the fact that we all are intelligent irrespective of the colours of our skins and our diverse cultures
We celebrate loyalty to the goals and aspirations of our country
The fifty years have come and gone
I'm sure some people still think its like yesterday
With all its hopes and fears
With all its successes and regrets
But there will come another fifty
This will mean Nigeria has lived for a century
What do we want to achieve then?
Recognising that the stage is ours to take
Guess what?
Its the turn of our generation
Its time to rise and take the lead
Its time to make responsibility for our country.
